Hublot's New Concrete Watch is an Ode to New York City

In a world where mechanical timepieces include everything from their own alarms to little globes that you can watch spin as the day goes on, it's not hard to believe the lengths some watchmakers will go to to make something different.

But instead of going out on a high-concept design limb for its newest watch, which is a working ode to New York City, the people at Hublot just chose a different material: concrete. The Swiss brand's latest release, a limited edition skeleton watch designed in collaboration with artist Tristan Eaton, applies a concrete bezel to the case of the much-loved Classic Fusion Aerofusion Chronograph. Just to drive the point home, the caseback features an Eaton illustration of the Statue of Liberty's face, overlaid with skyscrapers, a subway car, and a map of the city's coastline. (It's a throwback to a mural Eaton painted in Little Italy around four years ago.)

The 45mm case is made from a black ceramic material, and its H-shaped lugs were honed from black composite resin. Shoppers have the option of a gray leather strap or a slightly sportier black rubber.

"In an homage to one of the world’s most iconic cities, Hublot has continued to fulfill its mission to 'Be First, Be Different, Be Unique' by developing a watch with actual concrete elements incorporated in the bezel," said said Jean-Francois Sberro, Hublot's top guy in the United States.

Only 50 of the timepieces were made—and because rarity is a chief factor in determining prices for fine watches, this one will set you back $19,500. And with as many rich, New York-loving watch collectors as there are in the world, these things might move faster than you'd think.
