The funnyman's fit was on point, but he made one fatal black tie mistake.
Aziz Ansari is low-key one of the best-dressed men in Hollywood. And not in some unattainable way, either. He wears the slim fit trousers, minimal sneakers, sharp navy blazers (and, okay, rich guy swervy Gucci slippers) that any average Joe would be happy to have in his wardrobe. He also ain't half bad when it comes to suiting up—or black tie-ing up—for a red carpet event. That's why we're confused that at this year's Emmys, Ansari decided to go 90% of the way with his shawl-collar tuxedo look, only then to not wear a tie with a wing collar shirt. It's a move that we can only hope was intentional sloppiness, or worse, gross sartorial oversight.
Maybe Ansari forgot his bow-tie at home, or maybe he just decided to bring a touch of Italian sprezzaturra to the red carpet. Whatever the reason, there's a long way between "disheveled elegance" and just disheveled. Because showing up to a big, fancy event with your tie undone telegraphs that you don't really want to be there.
Still, there are ways the no-tie look could have worked out for the Master of None creator (and new Emmy winner). With a crisp white point collar shirt, the air-tie look would have been fully primed for an Emmys victory. There's always next year to claim his position as a master of tux.
