Here's One Way to Destroy a Four-Figure Louis Vuitton Bag

Make it into a skateboard!

For the most recent episode of Braille Skateboarding's You Make It We Skate It show on YouTube, one of the channel's fans sent in a board that he claims to have covered in the leather from his mother's beloved Louis Vuitton handbag (RIP). They billed it as the world's most expensive grip tape, which would be funny if this leather actually had any grip to it (oddly enough, the ease of executing skateboard tricks is not the first thing Vuitton craftsman have in mind when building pricey purses).

Nevertheless, the channel's maestro Aaron Kyro and the other guys in the video manage to do just about all of the tricks and maneuvers they set out to using the deck. It's only when they try to drop into a bowl that the lack of tread on the supple, monogrammed cowhide makes a difference. The video is just over 20 minutes long, and if you're feeling a mid-afternoon lull, it's an incredibly entertaining way to get through it.

The board is a handmade answer to the kinds of style-sports partnerships that usually require, like, whole companies to produce. But the board does join in a grand tradition of fashion labels putting their stamp—often literally—on athletic gear (even if this board is a cut-and-paste job unsanctioned by the French brand). After all, where would the living rooms of nouveau riche Californians be without a Chanel surfboard to put on display? Would we feel the same way about Jay Z's song "Tom Ford" if Ford hadn't made jerseys for both him and Beyoncé to wear on tour? Doubtful.

But to make remake a functional object—that is, an object that's meant to be used—by covering it with material stolen from the luxury world is a big deal in an era where people take their fashion iconography very seriously (Supreme made a faux-Vuitton skate deck in 2002, but it was recalled due to a copyright complaint about two weeks later). Then again, if Dapper Dan ran a skate shop, this is exactly the kind of deck he'd be selling like hotcakes.
