What on earth is going on?
First Justin Timberlake picked a tie that was too busy for his suit. Then Cameron Dallas fumbled on a full Windsor. And now Chris Pratt, America's chief lovable dork and the last living defender of both CrossFit and Paleo, has committed an offense against neckwear that's too glaring—and too easily fixed—for us to ignore.
At the New York premiere for his new movie The Magnificent Seven, Pratt chose a suit, shirt, and tie from the master of elegant menswear, Tom Ford. But with that half-inch gap between the top of his tie and his shirt collar, you almost don't see how good he looks. It's an unfortunate distraction, and with menswear (which is an inches game) little details like this can make the difference between a landing on a best-dressed list or, well, finding yourself in crabby posts like this one.
The thing is, if Pratt had cinched his tie just a little tighter, that void wouldn't have existed in the first place and we wouldn't be here. But we are here, because we know for a fact that Pratt can do this right—and because Tom Ford deserves better than for his work to be treated so casually.
There are bigger problems to fix in fashion—and in the world at large—and we acknowledge that. We also hope against hope that guys understand that putting on a tie is no longer an everyday necessity. It is, at this point, something special that's reserved for important occasions. So if you're going to bother putting on a tie at all, you might as well get it right.
Again (sigh), here's how it's done:
