Here's Why Opening Ceremony Should Make Olympic Uniforms for the Whole World

Fall Jackets

Earlier this week, downtown cool-kid retailer-turned-clothing brand Opening Ceremony unveiled their spring 2017 womenswear collection in a beauty pageant/fashion show but their men-folk fans were not left in the dark. To begin the show, the walkway to the stage was lined with 50 flag bearers, each wearing a riff on the popular OC Varsity Jacket but inspired by a different country.

"We wanted to celebrate the fact that the America we know is comprised of a diverse and expansive group of nations," says Humberto Leon, one of Opening Ceremony's co-founders."And to do so through our iconic varsity jacket felt like a perfect way to highlight each country's unique attributes—through color, symbols and patterns." Carol Lim, Opening Ceremony's other founding half, echoed the sentiment. "At the show, each flag bearer wore the jacket from which they had some part of their ancestry, which was both exciting and moving to us."

The design of each country’s flag, national symbols and crests helped inspire the color and decor of each jacket, all of which will be available later this year. Many feature “Opening Ceremony” or the country’s name written out in embroidery, in its country's original language. Click here to see all the jackets, and keep an eye out on openingceremony.com to see when you can pick them up.
