Cameron Dallas Can't Tie a Tie, and That's Problematic

Turns out the guy can't tie a tie (at least that's what we're assuming).

We're not taking shots at up-and-comer Cameron Dallas, the social media star who's currently hard at work taking the fashion world by storm here. We'd like to think of it more as constructively criticizing the 22-year-old. See, if you're going to participate in the celebrity style economy, you should at the very least be able to get the basics right. And on Wednesday, we learned that Dallas can't land the most important trick in the menswear toolbox: tying a tie.

Dallas suited up to attend the Hugo Boss spring 2017 show in a smart navy peak lapel suit. He complemented the look with a navy knit tie—and he would have looked really elegant if the end of the tie hadn't stopped several inches above the waist of his trousers.

It's the reverse of Donald Trump's most glaring sartorial problem: the Republican candidate's ties are often far too long. Instead of falling in line with your kidneys (or knocking on your pants' zipper), your tie should hit you right at the center of your belt buckle. And we don't want to be super draconian about this or anything, but it's not like it's hard. An informal poll of the GQ office found that most of the guys here learned how to do this when they were 12 years old. One guy mastered the skill when he was only 6, but he's British (and as we've learned, British kids are way ahead of the sartorial learning curve).

The difference between all of us and men like Dallas is that we don't have close to 9 million followers on Twitter, over 15 million devotees on Instagram, or 5 million thirsty subscribers watching our every move on YouTube. We're not role models in that sense. And if Dallas (or Trump, or any other inexplicably popular guy who wears ties in public) wants to make the most their moment in the spotlight, the very least they can do is show the rest of the world that they get the details right.

For future reference, here's how it's done:
