Let's Talk About Grown Men Wearing Overalls

An important topic sparked my Chris Pine's most recent travel outfit efforts.

Yesterday Chris Pine was spotted leaving the airport in Los Angeles wearing railroad-striped overalls, red suede Vans Sk8-Hi sneakers, and a straw fedora. To say this is a lot for one outfit is a gross understatement. Each item on its own would be a lot in three separate outfits. Until now, Pine has shown an almost too perfect mastery of dressed up and casual style. Also, he's almost never had a bad hair day. But the list of grown men we'd like to see wearing these overalls, or any overalls for that matter, is short and does not include the actor Chris Pine. Jaden Smith can wear overalls, Dev Hynes can wear them, Jared Leto—in very particular circumstances—could wear overalls. Tupac Shakur definitely rocked a pair of overalls right back in the '90s. So did Kris Kross (even if they were technically on backwards). But that's about it.

Even if we move beyond the overall silhouette, the railroad stripe fabric and straw hat launch the Star Trek actor hard and fast into Beverly Hillbilly territory. With corncob pipe, this would make an excellent Halloween costume. If you want to avoid looking like you're wearing a costume, avoid throwback clothing pieces in old time-y fabrics. We're cool with railroad stripes, when they show up on modern silhouettes. We love a fedora but we'd suggest one in a finer gauge straw or a neutral color felt. And we definitely love a pair of Old Skool Vans, but we think Pine could have gone for a more subdued tone. (We still aren't sold on all-red sneakers.) But if you really want to get noticed no matter where you're headed, from the grocery store to a transcontinental flight, then this is the outfit for you.
