Pajamas For Daytime Is One of Fall's Most Important Trends

Designers are making a bold proposition for guys who value both comfort and style.

No disrespect to Billy Bob Thornton, but who knew Billy Bob Thornton was... trendy?

At the Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony honoring Kathy Bates on Tuesday, the award-winning actor wore a pink-and-white striped shirt with gray-and-black striped jeans, both of which resemble pajamas—without actually being pajamas. That's a balance that designers are trying to strike right now: Designing PJs so appealing that even guys who aren't Julian Schnabel or Marc Jacobs will want to wear them in broad daylight.

One of the reasons this look is top of mind right now is that a ton of pajama trousers come down the runway earlier this week in Burberry's see-now, buy-now fall 2016 show. Tommy Hilfiger notably made pajamas the focus of his fall menswear collection, styling them with everything from suits to puffer jackets. And Phillip Lim was heavy on the sleepwear for fall, too. You can get a set of his (incredibly luxurious) pajamas for $800 online right now.

And just so we're being clear, the idea isn't that you should schlep around in a pair of ratty sweatpants or the basketball shorts you wear when you head to bed. The key to nailing the look is getting an elevated version of the sleepwear staple—perhaps even something that has a little sheen—and making the statement that you value both comfort and style.
