Pro tip: it's all about the mock-neck sweater
Seasons change, trends come and go, but the suit remains.
After wearing your trusty two-piece with a T-shirt and sneakers all summer, effortlessly manifesting the season's ~chill vibes~ in sartorial form, now is the time to slowly start thinking about how you're going to make it work as cooler temperatures become the norm. And while going back to your baseline of button-up and tie combo is the obvious choice—and one we fully support—may we gently remind you that there's another option out there, one that will indicate to those around you that you, fine sir, know what's up.
Friends, it's called the mock turtleneck sweater.
Somewhere between a turtleneck and a crewneck, the mock turtleneck (or mock-neck) has been favored by dad's and, notably, Steve Jobs—who had some goddamned exacting standards and knew a thing or two about design. And as we've come to learn, dad's are actually the fashion industry's unsung heroes of trend forecasting, thus the rise of the mock-neck is practically inevitable.
Common is the first celebrity we've seen throw his weight behind the trend and, damn, does he make a convincing bid for it to go big this fall and winter. A fine-gauge knit under a suit has obvious appeal—it'll keep you warm, it's classy but not too stuffy—and the way Common wore it, with a tonally similar suit, was some expert levels swagger. If it's good enough for him on a red carpet, it's definitely good enough to make happen in your day-to-day life, plus it'e even easier than figure out which shirt/tie combo is going to complement your suit and look good together. Basically, it's one of those looks that every suit-wearing man should mentally bookmark and come back to again and again.
You heard it here first guys: the mock turtleneck sweater. Get into it.
