This Is How Your Hoodies Should Fit Right Now

This fall, we're moving past slim fit and heading into looser, more chilled-out versions of your favorite pullover.

If there's one GQ style lesson that's been driven home again and again by us, it's that slimmer is almost always better. It's true 100% of the time when it comes to tailoring and still applies to most garments hanging in your wardrobe right now. But these days, as dress codes are loosened up and a streetwear-influenced silhouette has permeated fashion's highest echelons, garments with easier fits are becoming more and more acceptable—even by our streamlined-loving standards.

In 2016, pants have been given a relaxed fit overhaul, wide-cut tees can be found at chains like H&M, and now hoodies—which always have had their place as cozy staples—are loosening up. You can thank some of the coolest fashion labels and with-it designers for the extra room but just because they're out there, doesn't mean there aren't rules for pulling these new versions off. Here are the ones to pick up this season, from slightly slouchy to body-drowning, from our favorite brands. .

The Slightly Slouchy: John Elliott

John Elliott was kind of the patron saint of the slim cool guy hoodie a couple years ago (when we first anointed him as one of the Best New Menswear Designers in America), so you know when he starts making an oversized version the times are-a-changin'. Of course, Elliott's is still relatively fitted, simply cut wider across the back to create for the season's most cool guy clothing detail of fall 2016—the drop shoulder. Thanks to the slubby, more sophisticated cotton, it's perfect for being out on the town without making too much of a wave, and awesome pair for a slim fit bomber jacket layered over it. (Elliott's version won't bunch up in the sleeves like some oversized hoodies will).

The Oversized

Alexander Wang's sub-brand T by Alexander Wang has always been known for being a little slouchy, but finally the rest of the fashion world has caught up. His zip hoodies are the uber-cozy option for lounging around on the weekends in something minimal, sleek, cool, and course on trend. Just make sure if you do step out in one of Wang's hoodies to pair it with something a little more dressed up below, like some navy trousers and clean white sneakers.

The Ginormous

No brand is doing oversized hoodies like Vetements, whose fleece styles push $1000+ on the reg and are coveted by virtually everyone in fashion. The style owes something to Raf Simons, who was doing hoodies in this extremely oversized, extended sleeves way back at the beginning of the 2000s, but it's Vetements' graphic-printed styles that are the coolest hoodies on the planet in 2016. It's hard to wear one without buying into the full look with stone-washed Levi's, army boots and dad hats, but if you can pull it off (and have the cash to do such), more power to you.
