This Is Why Cargo Pants Get a Bad Name

Christian Bale's tactical-inspired trousers aren't exactly a good guy style move.

Okay, so Christian Bale is no longer Batman, but pending a miraculous Ben Affleck escape from the clutches of the Zac Snyder-verse, he's still our favorite Batman. But Bale has never been one to really try all that hard when it comes to dressing well. At red carpet events he usually falls somewhere between "totally fine" and "not a nightmare" which is to be expected from a guy who is as dedicated to his craft as Bale is. (Remember when he spent an entire press tour for Batman Begins speaking in an American accent, despite, you know, being from England.) But even with our generous hall pass in play, we can't ignore his recent cargo pants go undiscussed.

First and foremost, the fit on these is well, nonexistent. They're way too big, even for our current pants climate that's far more forgiving of roomier legs and where wider trousers are considered and advanced style swerve. And when paired with a boring, also meh-fitting black T-shirt and 2007-era laceless Converse sneakers, the effect isn't so much sleek utilitarian as it is dumpy dad.

Here's the thing: Wide-leg trousers are cool, but only when everything around them is dialed in, too. If you're going to go for the whole "military surplus" vibe with your pants, we'd recommend something like a plaid shirt and clean white sneakers just to drive home the point that you're not attempting to actually look like you're on active duty or living in the background of a 1995 Mobb Deep video.

But if you're in search of more Batman-ish vibes, know you don't need some secret lair to do so. All you have to do is opt for some new-age cargos from brands like Acronym, that come with all of the tech-y fabrics and practical pockets any night-dwelling vigilante (or regular-ass guy about town) might need.
