How to Wear a Turtleneck Every Which Way this Fall

Common can't stop wearing this fall's best knitwear bet and that's fine. Better than fine, actually.

Everyone deserves to be with someone who loves them as much as Common loves a turtleneck.

It's only been fall for 11 days, but the musician and actor has wasted no time hauling the freshly trendy sweaters out of cold storage. Over the past week and a half, Common has worn a turtleneck on three separate occasions. (This tally excludes that time he paired a mock neck sweater with a suit, which is fine because it was technically still summer when that happened anyway.)

Thanks to a handful of intrepid designers, the long-vilified knitwear saw a resurgence late last year that's carrying over into this fall. You'd be hard pressed not to find a fashion house or retailer that will sell you one: everyone from Uniqlo to Ralph Lauren Purple Label is in on the game, and with good reason. On especially cold days, a turtleneck can save you the trouble of a wearing a scarf. But successfully pulling one off is a feat not all guys can master.

For the most part, Common makes it work by pairing relatively thin-gauge, solid-colored sweaters with solid jackets and tailoring. That's the surefire way to make one work in your own wardrobe. But if you've already mastered the knitwear-as-underpinning swap, follow Common's lead put your turtleneck with some swervy pants like he did (in the rapper's case, windowpane patterned) at a New York Film Festival party just this weekend. Because if there's anyone who can convince regular guys that a turtleneck can be downright cool/manly/stylish-as-hell, you better believe it's Common.
