Here's Why You Should Be Wearing A Safety Pin on Your Lapel Right Now

Redferns

It’s easy to see a parallel between the U.K. deciding to leave the European Union and Donald Trump being elected President of the United States. Both votes shocked the world, changed the course of each country's history, and divided the citizens responsible for the decision almost instantly. Now, Americans in protest of Trump have borrowed a symbolic gesture from the Brits who rallied against Brexit by wearing safety pins on their shirts. The act is meant to show solidarity with women, Muslims, minorities, the LGBT community, and anyone else who fears what this new nativist chapter may mean their safety and well-being.

Twitter user @cheeahs, an American living in London named Allison, is credited for launching the movement after the Brexit vote in June. “If you put the pin on, to me you are pledging to stand up. It can’t just be an empty gesture. You are pledging to make a difference. You could record what’s happening, you could call the police, stop the bus driver” she told the Guardian this summer, “Even if you feel too frightened, you can go to the person afterwards and say: ‘I’m so sorry, is there anything I can do for you?’ Even if it’s just making them a cup of tea.”

We can’t think of a better reason to conjure your inner Johnny Rotten this week.
