To wear a leather jacket well is to wear it all the time, so it breaks in and molds to your body in a way that makes it look even more rare and expensive as the years go on. Eddie Redmayne understands this rule implicitly; he has been wearing his favorite black AllSaints leather jacket for years for everything from red-carpet events to coffee runs. Yesterday he even wore it on Ellen for an interview and bit that involved him rolling all over the floor doing impressions of animals (spoiler alert: his seal impression is truly demented). The four-year-old jacket dutifully rose to the occasion.
The takeaways here are 1.) to never buy a jacket in a size so small you can’t raise your arms in the air to mimic a unicorn should you be asked to and 2.) to break that swag in well. Don’t be precious about your leather jacket, only wearing it on movie dates and to "industry events". Wear it to a sports bar, wear it to buy and carry home a Christmas tree, wear it to visit with your friend and his small, messy children. The more roughed up and stretched out it gets, the better you’ll look.
Should you be in the market for one, here are a few somewhat affordable options to get you started.
