FILA Sneakers Just Got a Gosha Rubchinskiy Updgrade

The up-and-coming designer continues his trend of updating once-uncool classic kicks.

FILA sneakers occupies a unique space in sneakerhead culture. The Italian sportswear brand's kicks were never as cool as say, Air Jordans (not that many sneakers were), or Reebok Pumps, even through a rose-tinted lens of late '80s and '90s nostalgia. They never quite made it off the tennis courts or out of the closets of suburban dads to become a crossover success that so many sneaker brands hope to achieve (the FILA's apparel, on the other hand, has always occupied a clear space in the style world thanks to Bjorn Borg's epic tennis fits). But it looks as though FILA's latest release might be a hit with hypebeasts and menswear fans alike. The brand worked with streetwear-leaning Russian designer Gosha Rubchinskiy on a fresh silhouette that's certainly retro-tinged but ultimately looks right for right now.

Much like Vetements (a brand founded by two brothers who were born in Soviet Georgia) fetishizes American military and sportswear, Rubchinskiy's look is fueled by the designer's fascination with American skate culture with wonder and excitement. To those of us who took growing up in the United States for granted, FILAs were just another sneaker brand—but to Rubchinkskiy they were a part of the distant Western world. Here, Gosha has found a way to retain the shoes' initial classic appeal while creating something cleaner, sleeker (compared to older FILAs the shape seems to be slightly more streamlined), and covetable thanks to his embroidered logo at the heel. It may seem like a cosmetic cheap shot to build hype, but to kids around the world today, Cyrillic lettering has overtaken gothic fonts as the graphic lettering of choice. And if he could make the nurse-favorite Reebok Classics a flat-out hypebeast favorite, then FILAs should be a walk in the park.

There's a collection of FILA x Gosha Rubchinskiy sweatshirts to go along with the sneakers, including a recent red-white-and blue hoodie that sold out at Dover Street Market. And though we respect anyone's wishes to go for a full FILA look, a look back at Rubchinskiy's Spring-Summer 2017 runway show unveils a simple, but unexpected truth: These sneakers look damn good with a navy blue suit (FILA T-shirt optional).
