How to Layer All of Your Fall Jackets Right Now

Layering outerwear has been a popular style move for a couple of years now (although humans have been doing it for years because warmth), but there’s always way to remix the look so it feels new. Joe Jonas has an idea that’s worth trying this winter—it combines two menswear trends in a very clever way. Yesterday in London the DNCE frontman wore a luxe velvet jacket on the red carpet with black jeans and sneakers, then added an rugged Gap military coat overtop when he went outdoors. The effect was modern and young, and was only Jaden Smith-level crazy when you saw the Gap coat from the back (it's part of a limited edition collection designed by street artists).

If you're over 23, the trick is to not swerve too hard with either jacket. Not that we don’t love some Gucci insanity on the right guy, but subtle is the way to go here. That means you’re looking for a pared-down velvet jacket, and a parka with patches or embroidery that doesn’t reach Top Gun-level flashiness. Add your favorite jeans and streamlined sneakers and you’re in a stylish (not to mention warm) place.
