If You Like Cardigans, You Need This Next-Level Layering Piece

John Mayer has been a champion of the noragi for years—and now it's your turn.

Cardigan sweaters are an essential part of a man's wardrobe that function in two ways: One, they keep you warm and two, they instantly elevate any T-shirt and jeans look to a more elegant, refined, classic status, whether you wear it under a suit jacket or over a T-shirt. However, like all time-tested menswear staples, there's always a next-level move to embrace once the OG gets a little tired (or you just want to switch things up a bit). In the case of the cardigan, the next step up is the noragi shirt, and no one wears one better than Visvim-addict John Mayer.

First a little background: A noragi is a traditional Japanese workwear garment, and it's more of a shirt than a knit sweater—not that this fact gives it any less layerability (yup, definitely a word). In fact, a noragi's less-desnse weave actually makes it easier to wear over a shirt year under a coat. Plus, unlike cardigans it can be woven into interesting patterns that contrast against a white shirt or a navy overcoat. And as John Mayer displays here, they look practically effortless over a white T-shirt and worn with jeans and boots. (John Mayer really has the whole "unique tees and jeans" thing down to a science.)

Hiroki Nakamura, founder of Tokyo-based Visvim and native of Japan, is one of the best in the business at making noragis and Mayer has more than a few from the brand. Visvim's are expensive, however, and you don't have to spend that kind of dough to get the look. Below are a few noragi options at all different price points. We're not saying to abandon your cardigan rotation for good, but one or two of these robe-like bad boys in your closet might make getting dressed a little more interesting.
