Hermès Still ankle boot
Véronique Nichanian is the George R.R. Martin of menswear. In the three decades she’s helmed the men’s division at Hermès, she’s displayed an uncanny knack for world-building: everything Nichanian designs—be it a bespoke suit or a leather carryall or a baseball mitt—all fits together, makes sense together, in a larger shared universe. It’s a universe that is functional above all else, quietly but notably luxurious, and always exceptionally handsome. Take these boots, for instance. They’ve got the immense rubber soles necessary for chillier climes, but the artful ridges that frame the base of the boot disguise them as an elegant design choice. Ditto for the attractive ribbed collar and tongue that help keep things toasty, and the striking natural calfskin, used both inside and out, that’ll prevent stink and age like a charm. It all looks good, but works even better. They’re sophisticated enough to wear with a suit, but robust enough to survive several winters. And they’ll make you want to invest in even more of Nichanian’s peculiar brand of genius.
