Last night in Chicago, Kanye West sat down with GQ’s own Jim Moore for an in-depth conversation on fashion. The event took place at the Ralph Lauren flagship in the city’s upscale shopping mecca, known as the Magnificent Mile. (Swanky!) For many, a luxurious event at an institute of classic American menswear would usually call for one’s finest suit-and-tie and dressiest pair of shoes. But that wouldn’t be very Kanye. So, naturally, the rapper-designer showed up in an ensemble that broke most of the sartorial rules known to man—and looked deeply himself while doing it.
The outfit for the night included a lightweight mock-neck sweater, voluminous white pants, a tuxedo jacket, and sandals. On paper, it sounds like a wild outfit (and it totally is!), but West pulls it off in a way that not many others could. Let’s start with the white pants. It’s 2019, and many of menswear’s cardinal rules of yesteryear have been thrown out the window, including the concept of not wearing white after Labor Day. Whites and beiges are foundational shades that look just as good on a crisp October day as they do on a hot July one. West knows this, and his outfit is all the better for it. Secondly, West paired these billowing pants with a contrasting tuxedo jacket. This is the kind of off-center sartorial choice that is quite difficult to pull off, but when it happens, it is worthy of praise. (No risk, no reward, et cetera.) Lastly, but certainly not least, West chose to wear socks and sandals to a formal event, which is a bonafide expert-level move. It’s worth noting that Kanye isn’t wearing your average pool slides (à la Justin Bieber), but the type of advanced Japanese-looking footwear that will set you back a couple hundred bucks. Still, wearing any kind of sandals to a formal event is one way to buck convention—which, of course, Kanye loves to do, especially with sandals and suits.
In more ways than one, this look is quintessential Kanye. We may be used to seeing the rapper dispense unpalatable takes in a uniform of athletic wear these days, but mixing brands and styles in unexpected and idiosyncratic ways is as Kanye as it gets. The old Kanye, if you will.
