The Grateful Dead have always had a certain, you could say, spookiness about them. There’s the endless skulls-and-skeleton iconography, the brooding, jazzy jams, and the fact that the band emerged from the crucible of late-’60s Bay Area counterculture—a scary thought to all the parents whose kids became irredeemable hippies and Deadheads. Not to mention the name of the band itself. So a Halloween show really brings out the freaks. This year on Halloween, throngs of Deadheads—old and new—trick-or-treated all the way to Madison Square Garden to see Dead & Company, the Grateful Dead revival band led by Bob Weir and John Mayer who are playing a quick ten-show tour dubbed the Fall Fun Run. We sent our style correspondent, Mordechai Rubinstein (AKA Mister Mort), to document the costumes and fits Deadheads broke out on the spookiest night of the year.
