Steven Alan offers a subversive take on classics. Our collection is timeless, effortless, and understated clothing for men and women.
If you could go back and give yourself advice when you started your company, what would it be?
Spend enough time getting and developing a great team.
What — other than location, of course — makes your brand American?
I think both the fabrics we choose and the fit of our garments offer a modern take on Americana.
What was the second BNMDA experience like compared to the first?
I felt like the first was mostly exploratory, after that each went meeting at a faster and faster pace.
What is your favorite piece from your Gap collection, and why?
The wool over coat. It's such an easy layering piece for fall and its made in a great tweed fabric.
What was the hardest piece from your Gap collection to get right?
The blazers. So much goes into the fit, making sure it's relaxed but not too relaxed. The perfect shoulder is essential.
What’s the one inspiration source you consistently return to in your creative process?
The subway. I love to people watch on my daily commute.
What is the most important thing you’ve learned in your career?
Constantly explore and get better. In addition, my team to do the same.
What’s the best thing about being a menswear designer right now? What’s the most challenging thing?
Men are bolder now in the way they dress. The challenging is to continue to push that while being wearable.
What is the biggest change you’ve seen with your customers since you started your business?
The move away from heritage.
What’s the one item every man needs for fall 2016?
The ice parka.
Who do you think is the most stylish man alive right now and why?
Jim Moore. His personal style is ageless and effortless. He has a very refined eye.
