How three guys went from one store in Soho to a global lifestyle brand—and became GQ Best New Menswear Designers in America along the way.
Names: (left to right) Morgan Collett, Colin Tunstall, and Josh Rosen
In one sentence, describe your brand.
Saturdays NYC is an international lifestyle brand based in NYC with products sourced from around the world and designed to work anywhere.
If you could go back and give yourself advice when you started your company, what would it be?
Colin: I wouldn’t. It would change the outcome, which I wouldn’t want to happen. I’ll take advice for the future, now, though!
Morgan: Think about how your decisions you make today will affect you and the company in three years.
What — other than location, of course — makes your brand American?
Morgan: The mix of incredible humans from all over the world that work at Saturdays. Josh: Our attitude.
What was the second BNMDA experience like compared to the first?
Josh: We knew what to expect a little bit more than last time, so we had a bit more direction.
What is your favorite piece from your Gap collection, and why?
Colin: The camel topcoat. Because the weather is starting to change and I don’t have a piece like this in my closet yet.
Morgan: The camel coat, because it’s a beautiful piece that I would wear all winter.
What’s the one inspiration source you consistently return to in your creative process?
Colin: Where I spend my time. NYC, Japan, France and Australia are places I spend most of my time now.
Morgan: Our original concept of varying moments in NYC history.
Josh: NYC, always.
What is the most important thing you’ve learned in your career?
Colin: There is no finish line. Hard work and patience will lead to great things if you trust yourself.
Morgan: You have to be true to what you believe in and never compromise for anyone else.
What’s the best thing about being a menswear designer right now? What’s the most challenging thing?
Josh: It’s an exciting industry that is changing and always picking up momentum.
Colin: You can do whatever you want, pretty much, and find an audience or even create your own. But you can work every hour of the day and still feel behind.
Morgan: Continuing to define your voice and build longevity.
What is the biggest change you’ve seen with your customers since you started your business?
Morgan: Our customers have been very loyal over the years.
Colin: But we’ve seen more diversity. As we grow we’re able to connect with more people in our brand.
Josh: We’re always excited to create new collections for them each season.
Reversible sweater, $149 / Shorts, $54.95 / Baseball hat, $29.95
TOM SCHIRMACHER
What’s the one item every man needs for fall 2016?
Colin: If you don’t own a denim jacket, you need to get one. You need pieces that you can layer and that are versatile.
Morgan: The Morgan topcoat from our winter 2016 collection.
Who do you think is the most stylish man alive right now and why?
Colin: Brian Zbichorski. He is one of our wholesale account executives and he's always on point with a smile.
