Tour the Eclectic West Village Digs of the Couple Behind NYC Design Store Calliope

  • "The

"The dining room table we designed ourselves. We built a piece with interchangeable legs and an extension so that by day, it sat as a coffee table, but when we wanted to entertain we could prop it up to a full table that seats 10-12. The wood is from a 100-year-old barn in Pennsylvania. The copper dining chairs from Blu Dot are great because they'll exhibit patina over time. The rug under the dining table is from Morocco. We went into the souk with the intention of bringing home one rug, but came back with four. The pendant lamps, giant winch in the ceiling, and circular staircase are the only remaining elements from when we first saw the place."

"The TV console is a piece that we found at an antique fair in Connecticut. It came from a French steel mill and I think it's from the early 1900s. We like to collect a lot of things from our travels, so having something that could function as a piece to house the TV, as well as display for all our weird shit was what we were after. We're big record listeners and often rotate out the vinyl that is on the bottom shelf. None of the records are precious; most of them are from the dollar bin."

  • "The

"The bookshelf was another piece we had built for our previous apartment. It's actually two bookshelves stacked on top of one another. The horn is Michael's grandfather's. Neither of us know how to play it, but it's nice to have a bit of whimsy from his grandpa to remind us to keep it easy. The black globe was an antique store find. There's a lot of contention in that globe. Michael is a fan, I am not, but throughout the years we've learned to pick our design battles. The sketch is from my friend Hannah Metz, it was a gift for our first Valentine's Day together. The pig was actually what Michael gave me for that first Valentine's Day too! The brass snail we picked up at an antique store in New Orleans. We try to travel as often as our schedule allows—most times it's for work, but this bookshelf is a great home for all the random things we bring back. Each shelf is a nice memory of places we've been and things we've seen both together and separately."

  • "There's

"There's no glamorous story behind that chair. It was just a piece we found online, on one of those flash sale sites. Sometimes you just need a regular chair. The red plant holder is something that was found on Etsy. I'm very proud of that plant; it's survived for almost 10 years. I'm getting better at keeping plants off the brink of death."

  • "The

"The throw is from Sweden. It's super cozy in the winter; the Swedes just do cozy right. The other crocheted blanket is something that my grandma made back in the '80s. The art hanging on the wall is a piece by Paul Richard. He does these little drip portraits all over the city, on the sidewalks. He also built the frame it's in."

  • "We

"We decided to paint the floor and ceiling throughout the apartment white, to brighten up the space. There's a lot of brick, and coupled with wood beams and wood floors the space felt really closed in. We used marine deck paint in a high gloss. It took about eight months for the floors to break in. We have a dog, so after the first month or two there were certain areas that wore faster than others, and I thought we may have made a huge mistake painting them white but after a few more months it looked lived in. The stools are Restoration Hardware. We wanted something simple and easy to move around. A lot of times when we have friends over, we hang out in the kitchen, so the bar stools get a lot of use."

  • "The

"The countertops are soapstone and the kitchen lights above the bar are from Schoolhouse Electric."

  • "Since

"Since the kitchen area is pretty plain, we like to add in bits of color with accessories or appliances— like the toaster or the yellow Le Creuset. The rug is from Turkey."

  • "The

"The table under the stairs is an old drafting table that Michael found. We use it to do writing or sketching, but often it's the table that we just throw all our junk on. Doesn't everyone have one of those spots where all the things you find in your pocket at the end of the day collect?"

  • "The

"The marble coffee table is a piece that we designed and had built in Brooklyn. We sell customized versions of it in Calliope as well. The red rug underneath is one that we brought back from Morocco; it's my favorite rug in the house. The time we spent there really influenced both our lives. There are so many little elements throughout the apartment that came from that trip, either directly or indirectly, and I love having reminders of the sights, smells, sounds, and people we experienced there."

  • "The

"The rocking chair is an old Eames that we found online. The mirror against the wall is an old door that we picked up from the same place we got our television cabinet; it's from the same French steel mill. The plant holder is something we picked up at an antique shop in Pennsylvania. We head out to PA a few times a year to go to auctions where we do antique buying for our store."

  • "The

"The little blanket is a vintage Suzani from Uzbekistan. It rotates throughout the house; sometimes we keep it on the bed, sometimes it hangs over the back of the couch."

  • "We

"We had to partially rebuild the deck when we did renovations because it wasn't up to code so we decided to do a mix of concrete and wood. It sort of mimics what we did with the wood and white cabinets throughout the apartment and the rest of the building. We spend a lot of time outdoors, even in the winter. We use our bbq a lot, all through the summer it's our main way of cooking. Every year at the start of spring we have a big planting weekend and a lot of people who work at Sub Rosa come over and we plant new things for the season. This year we did some herbs—basil and sage, as well as some lavender."
