Frank Ocean Had the Best Explanation for Wearing Vans in the White Hou

When Frank Ocean showed up to the White House state dinner on Tuesday night, everyone's reaction consisted of the same thing: Is he wearing Vans? The fact that Ocean showed up to the white house in a perfect-fitting blue suit and some checkerboard slip-ons drew loads of attention from the Internet (us included). It was so buzzy that reporters on the scene that night immediately asked Ocean about his choice in footwear, in the process getting the first interview out of Ocean in three years. Man, being a white house correspondent seems wild. One minute you're asking President Obama about Aleppo, the next you're talking to Frank Ocean about his laceless shoes. What a time to be alive.

Here was his simple explanation when asked what his thought process was when choosing Vans to wear with his suit. "You can't think, you just gotta do things," he replied. He also downplayed the swerve by blaming it on the fact that it was his first-ever state dinner. At first all of that that might seem like a quintessentially vague Frank Ocean speak, and it is. But it's also some sage style wisdom from one of the best-dressed men in the world right now. Though we love to scrutinize the most minute details of our clothes down to the exact centimeter a pant is tailored, sometimes getting dressed is just about feel.

By that we mean, does what you're wearing feel right? If so, then go with it. If you're visiting the White House (or even just turning up for someone's wedding), know that the night probably isn't about what you're wearing, anyway, so there's no need to freak out if you're comfortable and appropriately dressed. And slip-on sneakers are always a viable option for your simple navy blue suit, even if pulling off a daring move like checkerboard Vans in the White House might be a move best reserved for rock stars.
