Opening Ceremony's founders are celebrating their National Design Award by re-introducing their diamond hoodie.
Every great brand has a moment-making product that helps it enter the spotlight. For Ralph Lauren, it's the polo shirt. For Gucci, it's the horsebit loafer. And for Opening Ceremony, it's the diamond hoodie.
The not-so-but basic sweat was first introduced when the brand's New York store opened in 2002. It was the first garment designed by founders and creative directors Carol Lim and Humberto Leon (who also do double duty designing for Kenzo). And this week, the ahead-of-the-curve twosome are bringing it back in limited quantities to celebrate their latest achievement: being honored with Cooper Hewitt's national design award for fashion. (It's been a fun 24 hours for this dynamic duo: on Wednesday, they unveiled Kenzo's collaboration with H&M.)
The original version flew off the shelves despite being brought into the market at a time when people weren't that wild about hoodies. And yet, in spite of having to compete with consumer's newfound appetite for sexy tailored clothing (or, worse, velour tracksuits and boot cut jeans), the diamond hoodie's simple design immediately resonated with cool kids. It also became a sort of calling card for OC's aesthetic: staple pieces with modern, graphic twists. And now that every other guy you see on the street is wearing some form of athleisure, the 2016 version is sure to sell out as quickly as it did 14 years ago.
You'll find the hoodie in Opening Ceremony's stores in New York and LA, as well as on its website, for $95—which is a small price to pay for a rare piece of truly historic fashion design.
