How to Avoid Two Common Outfit Killers

James Franco just made both of them.

Sometimes being born with movie star good looks and being an actual movie star just isn't enough to impress us. (Life's unfair, we know.) We want the bold-faced names we cover to dress the part too. And yesterday at the Mill Valley Film Festival in California, James Franco came close to killing it in his slim navy on navy seersucker suit, but was crippled by two all-too-common missteps.

The first issue at hand is the actor's gloriously wavy hair (no, not his mustache, surprisingly). The problem here: it's too out of control. We can get on board with some curls and even some bedhead-level messy styling, but things should be trimmed around his ears and at the base of his neck. For the record this is what hair that needs cutting looks like. When you're going for a Bob Dylan-esque hair style, minor details can mean the difference between rogue sex appeal and lazy stoner hair.

The second mistake was of the sartorial variety and has claimed Leonardo DiCaprio as a victim on several occasions. We're talking about the second button on Franco's two-button suit being fastened. This is a menswear 101 no no. Not only is it unflattering, it's a situation that makes a jacket that doesn't quite fit look even worse. See, a suit's fabric should fall from your shoulders without pulling around your middle. The more you cinch it the more it will look like a straight jacket and the less flattering it'll be for your core. The point is, this mistake is easy to avoid—and involves less work!

So if you need to write yourself a reminder and pin it to the door of your closet, go ahead and do it. If you need to build an app that reminds men to get a haircut every three-to-four weeks, then invent it (actually, wait, that's our good idea). The point it, don't forget to avoid either of these all-too-easy errors the next time you're have to leave the house looking your best.
