Tom Hardy Covered Up His Body Tattoos With Way More Body Tattoos

The new trailer for his upcoming FX show Taboo sees a shirtless hardy covered in tribal tattoos.

Early next year, Tom Hardy's eight part miniseries Taboo will land on FX. It's the story of a man named James Delaney who, in 1814, returns to England after spending ten years in Africa to start a shipping and seek revenge on those who have wronged him and his now-deceased father. (There's also something about diamonds, apparently.) Coincidentally, the story was written by Hardy and his real-life dad Chips, and based on the first few previews from the show, seems to feature lots of Tom Hardy's signature character traits: A lot of brooding, a weird, hard-to-place accent, a violent streak, and a few good tattoos. And though Hardy has his fair share of tattoos in his day-to-day life (as well as a world-class cowlick and a penchant for razor-sharp suiting), based on a few shirtless shots in the show's new promo clip, it seems they were covered up in favor of, well, lots more tattoos—specifically those of the tribal variety.

The thing is, tribal tattoos in today's day and age—even in Hardy's case—have earned a sour reputation in terms of style and culture. For one, if you're not actually a member of a tribe, they're kind of insensitive. And two, the bold patterned designs simply don't look that great and in Western society channel 'roided-up gym rats more than anyone. To be clear, we're not anti-tattoo. There are lots of tattoos out there we endorse, including those of the micro and macro variety.

The most important thing to remember before getting any kind of ink, whether it's on your leg, arm, or face (though, like, think twice about it) is this: Make it your own. We're sure Hardy's character on Taboo will turn out to have an interesting story behind his, but if the only reason you get a tattoo is because you think it makes you look cool, then we have some news: It doesn't.
