Unless you are a baby.
There are few moments in a grown man's life where going shirtless is appropriate. But there is literally no occasion when it makes sense to wear a suit shirtless (Iggy Pop gets a pass because he's Iggy Pop). Nevertheless, Nico Tortorella has created a different set of rules for himself. The actor and star of the TV show Younger showed up to a movie premiere yesterday in a handsome gray suit with a few necklaces and some chest hair instead of a shirt. And his style transgressions didn't stop there. Allow us to recount the many style rules broken here:
Rule #1: If you are wearing a suit, you have to wear a shirt.
In fact, if you are in public, you have to wear a shirt. Unless of course you're swimming, showering or just showered, having sex or are about to have sex, playing beach volleyball, or you are a baby. The end.
Rule #2: When wearing a two button suit, never button the second button.
The second button on a two button suit isn't meant to be buttoned. It's a hard and fast menswear rule because buttoning that second button makes you look heavy and can cause unflattering bunching in the jacket's fabric. Perhaps Tortorella was trying to avoid showing off his belly button. But again, this wouldn't be a concern were he wearing a shirt.
Rule #3: Stick to one swerve at a time.
We love a ballsy dresser, but even the flashiest men know not to use all their swerves up at once. In this case, Tortorella's hat, naked chest, and man jewelry are pushing him over the edge into crazy town. If it were up to us, we'd lose the hat, add a shirt, and keep the necklaces.
