The Tie Bar Just Launched an Incredibly Affordable Line of Dress Shirt

Think of these $55 wonders as the perfect canvas for your favorite tie.

When The Tie Bar's Allyson Lewis noticed that customers were bringing their own shirts into the brand's Chicago store (to better visualize what they'd look like paired with the accessories sold there), she knew she needed to do something about it.

"You'd be surprised at how often it happened," said Lewis, a Tie Bar veteran who this year became the company's president. "So much so that we just got rings and rings of dress shirt fabrics and suiting fabrics. It was our way of saying, 'You don't have to bring all of your clothes into the store. We have all the swatches covered so you can see how it would look.'"

But on Monday, The Tie Bar went a step further by launching its ever first line of shirts. Now, its customers won't have to visualize anything: they'll be able see exactly what ties, tie bars, and pocket squares will look like against the 11 shirting styles the brand now sells.

Lewis and company have been working on them for about 18 months, and even launched a small test collection to see how their Chicago customers would react. They built the feedback—both good and bad—into their inaugural offering, designed to be an essential selection of the pieces every guy should have in his closet. It focuses on staple patterns like gingham and tattersall, in addition to white and blue solids. Ten of the shirts in the line are non-iron (the eleventh is cut from a more casual chambray), which helps the men wearing them look fresh all day long. The hems are longer than average, keeping them securely tucked in all day long.

The shirts zig while everyone else is zagging: Lewis said she heard complaint after complaint from guys who, in the athleisure vacuum, had trouble identifying where they could get more polished options.

"They were having a really hard time finding a great dress shirt to wear in a more professional setting," where ties and other elements of corporate mufti matter. "We really designed everything in our collection with that in mind. How can we create the perfect canvas for ties and accessories?"

The shirts also fit squarely with The Tie Bar's price and quality ethos: they start at just $55, but you can buy three for $140. And if you can't visit its store or one of the Nordstrom locations that sell its wares, its website will soon feature a visualizer that shows what shirt-and-tie combinations look like.

"This is what our customers wanted to do all along," Lewis said, "and now we're giving them the product to do it."
