Here’s Why Shia LaBeouf Always Dresses Like A Broke College Student

Turns out, more thought goes into his look than you'd think.

Shia LaBeouf has cultivated a personal style that's hard to define. The actor swears by vintage tees, slim sweatpants (or jeans), dad hats, and either Nikes or military boots, a look that seems representative of his anti-establishment stance as a celebrity/actor. And whether his influence is actual or just perceived, LaBeouf's own style can be spotted in the legitimate menswear world, namely in the casual cool of Yeezy Season 3, the '90s-kid nostalgia of Gosha Rubchinskiy, or the normcore style of Vetements. But let's remember that LaBeouf is an actor that doesn't half-ass anything, be it a role on screen or an art project IRL. And when it comes to what he wears, one has to ask the question: Does LaBeouf not care about his clothes or is it all part of some calculated anti-fashion look? Last week, LaBeouf finally gave us an answer.

"People look at me and they go, 'He looks homeless. He doesn't care.' [But] this [outfit] took a lot of time. For real. Everyone's got a uniform, you know what I mean? Even though it looks haphazard, it's actually very thought through," he said on B96 Radio in Chicago. "I want to be aware of my [Walt] Whitman and my blue collar. " So, now we at least know LaBeouf does in fact care a whole lot, even when, as one meme says, "He always looks like he's late for an 8AM class." But it turns out his disheveled look has deeper meaning.

He said, "I'm also talking to veterans. I'm over at the U.S.O. talking to people who've been through stress, and they don't really want to see clean cut Charlie...We're always performing, and we're thinking about who were going to go perform for...you look in the mirror and you ask 'Who do I want to show up with?'"

So, it turns out that LaBeouf also dresses the way he does to avoid coming across as too Hollywood when speaking to people. And to a certain extent, we get it. If you're talking to a veteran suffering from P.T.S.D., walking in the place wearing a three-piece suit with a perfectly groomed haircut might set the wrong tone. On the other hand, a veteran might think that wearing ratty clothes just to seem more relatable despite the fact you're a multi-millionaire is a little manipulative. Also, we're not so sure Ugg boots and Crocs are exactly relatable to anyone, but hey, we're glad we at least know now that Shia LaBeouf is self-aware when it comes to things like tucked-in T-shirts (to sweatpants) and wearing the same military boots for a year-plus. And, for what it's worth, when he turns up for more Hollywood things like red carpets, the guy still looks great in a tuxedo.
