Two Can't Fail Ways to Ace Suits With Patterns

2016 Steve Granitz

For the suit swerve novice and the veteran.

Straying from your style comfort zone in a swaggy patterned suit can be hard, especially when it means dropping some major cash. We get it, you know you look good in your current solid blue or gray go-to so why mess with the system? Well for starters, comfort ain't all it's cracked up to be—do you really want to be known as Mr. Comfortable? No goddamnit, you wanna be the man who kills it on a daily basis! To that point, check out Joe Jonas and Lucas Hedges on red carpets in New York and Los Angeles last night. The men wore two different takes on a micro patterned suit, one in midnight blue with a black check and the other in a vibrant cherry red.

For the true beginner, the blue version of this suit is your best bet. The background color and the check are close in tone so its pattern is less of a radical swerve. Hedges kept things classy with a matching blue tie, crisp white shirt, and black lace ups. For someone with a little more experience, like Jonas, a bright red checkered suit with blackout shirt and tie gets this swerve across without giving into crazy levels of showboating. Both men aced the fit and styling too. When your suit is covered in pattern you really don't need accessories and should keep your grooming cleaned up and classic. Props to Jonas for his slicked back locks and barely-there stubble. Hedges may be a newcomer, but his messy coif is straight out of the movie star playbook.
