Steve Bannon Doesn't Understand Layering

One collar at a time, please.

Fall is here, bringing with it peak layering conditions. After months of tees and shorts, the temperature is ripe for every kind of jacket imaginable, the coziest hoodies, flannel shirts, and long sleeve tees. And for the most part, we endorse piling your favorite fall gear on however you see fit. We didn't think there was a wrong way to layer, until now. Leave it to erstwhile shadow president Steve Bannon to prove us wrong.

Last night on 60 Minutes, the Breitbart exec and former White House Chief Strategist dressed in an all-black outfit that included a black polo shirt, black button down, and roomy black blazer. We're big fans of going Johnny Cash-style black-on-black. This, however—with one collar piled on top of another—is not the way to do it.

Bannon is by no means a picture of good style: he wore those weird shorts, and put an ugly spin on one of fall's most beloved outerwear staples—the Barbour Bedale jacket (the guy's mere proximity to clothing can threaten its stylish reputation). But his habit of wearing two collars in one outfit is the habit that really needs to be addressed—if not for his sake then for yours. For the record, shirts that are A-OK to layer together include: a T-shirt under a button down; an undershirt under a button down, a polo, or a tee; a T-shirt under a long-sleeve tee; a T-shirt under another T-shirt; or a tank top under a button down or a long sleeve tee. That's it. If you're still confused, just remember that you should only wear one collared shirt at a time.

Maybe Bannon sees himself as a shirt-collar renegade (breaking the rules with maximum volume is part of his brand, right?). Maybe wearing two collars makes the guy feel more manly, or on the attack when he's actually on the defense. Either way, it's a bad look—and only compounded by 60 Minutes's couple hundred pounds of makeup. Don't be like Steve Bannon.
