DAYTIME TALK-SHOW SPECTACLES
Was this a press conference or an episode of Sally Jessy Raphael? (Millennials, Google it.) Westbrook had been known for taking a risk or two in the wardrobe department by the time of this June 2012 press conference, but the red glasses and comic-book-printed shirt he chose here let the world know how serious he was about his explosive personal style.
A LEOPARD IN THE JUNGLE
Westbrook, who today has his own line of eyewear, took ophthalmic (and sartorial) liberty when he paired glasses with a short-sleeved leopard shirt and green trousers at a Richard Chai fashion show in 2012.
THE HIGH-FASHION FASHION RATPACK
Though he might be alone in people who pull this look off, it takes some serious style skills to pull off a high-fashion shirt/poncho and a fedora at the same damn time. This is the 360-degree reverse left handed layup of the style game.
THE FASHION WEEK LAYERING TRICK
By 2013, Wilson's love of fashion (and penchant for putting together statement-making outfits) was so well known that he was a bona-fide front row regular. A waxed cotton biker vest over a polka-dotted shirt is a hard thing for photographers to resist.
BLEACH-STAINED DENIM, HEAD TO TOE
It would be easy to laugh at a guy who wore a Canadian tuxedo in earnest. But finding a bleach-stained denim shirt and an equally bleach-stained pair of jeans takes commitment. Westbrook gets extra points here for wearing his own shoes, the Jordan Westbrook0, in an eye-catching shade of red.
THE ELECTRIFYING SLIDES
One, note that Westbrook is wearing a vintage Michael Jordan tee, showing that he's a humble enough guy to pay homage to the G.O.A.T. (And sure, it doesn't hurt that Jordan Brand pays him to rock their products.) But the real cozy guy swerve here aren't the sweatpants—it's the slides, which we cannot in good conscience tell any man to wear outside of a beach or public shower situation. But damn does he look comfortable in his clothes (and in his own skin).
THE LEATHER TANK TOP
For most guys the term "leather tank top" might sound oxymoronic, even if the leather is perforated like a basketball journey. But Russell Westbrook is not most guys. He even managed to save the look, which he paired with black trousers, from looking too severe by choosing a pair of golden sneakers.
THE FLORAL PRINTED SHIRT
It takes major stones to show up to a red-carpet event for which most guys suit up in nothing more than a shirt with roses printed on the sleeves. But that's exactly what Westbrook wore to the 2014 ESPY Awards.
THE PARKA AND SHORTS COMBO
Usually if you're wearing a jacket that extends to your knees, it means the weather is pants-appropriate. Thing is wearing a longer jacket with shorts can make you look like a ready-to-act streaker. But when Westbrook sported a Public School parka with a T-shirt and shorts, he simply made it look sporty and stylish, while the fact his jacket had a hood (and wasn't some belted trench style) kept things from feeling creepy.
HIGH FASHION ALL BLACK EVERYTHING
Westbrook eventually became a guest at the international menswear shows, where his looks got slightly more refined—but no less daring. The outfit he wore to Givenchy's spring 2016 show broke the rules for how ripped your ripped jeans should be and how a t-shirt should fit. And yet he still looked great.
ARTFULLY PAINT-SPLATTERED JEANS
If you think the paint on the jeans Westbrook wore to Dior's spring 2016 show is a little too much, imagine how boring he'd look with un-painted denim.
THE INDOOR HEADBAND
We're not anti-headband at GQ, but usually it just needs some context like a hiking trip or if you're in the gym and trying to keep your long-ish hair out of your eyes. But Russell, who doesn't even wear a headband during games, makes the look his own by pairing it with ripped jeans and some red sneakers to match.
A FULL LENGTH FUR
Few materials are as warm as fur, but we're fairly certain Westbrook put on this full-length coat more for show than for function in New York City this February. Your ankles might not get cold walking from your car straight into a building, but that doesn't mean you can't make a statement while you're doing it.
A CANADIAN TUXEDO … IN CANADA
GQ followed Westbrook as he got dressed for All-Star Weekend in Toronto this year, an occasion for which he chose another Canadian Tuxedo. And you can't help but admire a man who's ready to adopt local customs as soon as he steps foot in a new country.
THE PATTERNED STATEMENT SUIT
When Westbrook wears a suit, you can bet it won't be a boring gray or navy option. Later during All-Star Weekend, Westbrook chose a double-breasted plaid suit that not even the most stylish tailoring fanatic could pull off. That he chose to wear it with a band-collar shirt proves that he knows where the boundaries of personal style are—and that he knows when to ignore them.
THE PONCHO
Most guys require a torrential downpour before they'll even think about wearing ponchos. For Westbrook, they're just bigger t-shirts.
The Finishing Touch
If Westbrook weren't wearing a hat here, it's a look we think pretty much any guy can pull off. (Chelsea boots, slim jeans, a graphic tee, flannel shirt, necklace.) But, once you know Russ, you know there's no chance in hell he wasn't going to wear that hat. More power to him.
