Embrace Your Inner Dad with This Functional Fall Style Move

Every day of every month at GQ, we start your morning on Instagram with visual advice on What to Wear Today. But we want to go deeper. Give you the nuts and bolts of how to get the look into your wardrobe. Today we're focusing on pocket-heavy outerwear layers that are still young and cool.

What do dads love more than telling the same story over and over again and futzing with their tools in the garage? Pockets. Lots of pockets. Which might be why you tend to avoid articles of clothing with too many of them. While we generally applaud those instincts, the pockets usually aren't the problem. Wether it's cargo pants or a utility vest, keeping things young and cool is all about nailing the fit and styling the item with modern, streamlined basics (i.e. not a boxy, Tommy Bahama button-down). Once you've got those elements right, you don't have to worry about much else. Your jacket can have 6 pointless pockets and you'll still look young and fashion-forward. (Assuming you don't stuff those pockets with digital cameras, your prescription, and/or a water bottle.)

Here, in preparation for your next 48-hour escape or chill weekend in town, five classic ways to embrace your inner dad without giving up your cool-factor in the process.
