How to Wear Neutral Colors This Fall

Head-to-toe tan, no hype necessary.

Yesterday actor Milo Ventimiglia showed off some next-level style know-how at an event in West Hollywood, CA. Ventimiglia arrived in slim khaki chinos and a greenish-tan crewneck sweatshirt worn with brown lace-up boots, a simple brass cuff, and a black motorcycle jacket. Why is this a big deal? Well, for one thing, in 2016, wearing khaki pants isn't as straightforward as it used to be. Of course, we're happy to have more options than preppy chinos (no offense grandpa), but not every man is ready to experiment with Yeezy-level layering, or revisit his skate-era Dickies.

That's why Ventimiglia's successful execution of tan-on-tan is so good. It isn't so much of a swerve as it is a confident embrace of basics in basic colors (TBH the mustache is swerve enough). His well-fitted trousers—slim but not too skinny with a hem that hits just below the ankle crease—are the difference between a drab outfit and a killer one. The same goes for his sweatshirt which is snug without that telltale too-tight fabric pulling. Besides the great fit, the actor succeeded in his great choice of tans. Knowing which neutrals work for you and how they work together is an essential part of menswear 101. So when it comes to choosing the exact tan, beige, or khaki to flatter your skin tone, nothing works better than trying something on with a retail wing man. If a certain item makes you look at all pale or sickly, put. it. down. Stay away from colors that match your skin exactly and start with strong, saturated shades.

Lastly, Ventimiglia's look wouldn't be complete without two key accessories: his brown leather key hook and his brass bracelet. They both work to break up the monochrome color palette while adding two hits of stylish and manly hardware.
