Nike's Back to the Future Sneakers Will Only Cost You $10

A raffle for the self-lacing Nike Mags is going on now through October 11.

The stop-and-go saga of the Nike Mag sneaker is finally coming to an end on October 17th, when 89 pairs of the self-lacing style will be given out via a raffle going on now through the 11th on Nike.com (as well as the brand's SNKRS app). Since it hit the big screen in 1989's Back to the Future II, the shoe has had a special place in the imaginations and hearts of sneakerheads, first as a prop, then in 2011 as a replica of itself, and in 2015, as a fully-realized self-lacing style. It was just last week that we became skeptical that the Nike Mag would ever see the light of day after a Wired article seemed to skirt the issue. However yesterday the Swoosh announced the raffle release, which will only cost $10 per ticket and the proceeds of which will go entirely to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research.

There's no limit to the amount of raffle tickets fans can buy, and we're happy to see that Nike is donating all of the money from the raffle to a worthwhile and important charity. That said, these sneakers have always been more an icon of movie magic than something we'd ever really want to see someone wear. If you win the raffle, congrats, but now that we're living in times after even Back to the Future's future, we think it's okay to say these have more of a place in a trophy case than on your actual feet. Nike's ongoing dedication to self-lacing technology is cool (and potentially game-changing), but even they know it's time to put the Nike Mag in the past. When it comes to the future of sneakers, where we're going, we just don't need Nike Mags any more.
