The right coat can make any outfit.

Welcome to TBT, a look back at the epic style moves from decades past. Up today: Straight from the cover of our GQ October issue, an actor famous for iconic movies like Forrest Gump, Big Trouble in Little China, Escape from New York, later Escape from L.A. and more recently The Hateful Eight and the upcoming Fast 8. A man whose personal style can be described as "edgy western dad" and who was never afraid of a bold piece of outerwear.

Who: Kurt Russell

When: 1989

Where: Outside Le Cirque restaurant, New York City

Why: Kurt Russell made a career playing tough guys with a quirky homegrown appeal—remember Captain Ron? In real life, his personal style followed suit. A glimpse inside the actor's closet during the late eighties would probably yield more than a few pairs of cowboy boots, western belts, aviator glasses, and boatloads of plaid. And on one autumn evening in NYC, Russell hit the town with longtime partner Goldie Hawn in an outfit that was worthy of one of Hollywood's best leading men: a college rep tie, gray corduroys, a tweed blazer, leather boat shoes, and a pair of can't-miss-em oversized glasses. He tied this all together with a hulking, fur-collared plaid wrap coat. It's a style move taken straight from Ralph Lauren's modern aristocrat playbook. It's also absolutely bonkers by today's sartorial standards. Back then that coat probably read as nothing but dollar signs. Today, it reads as rancher's first time in the big city.

Which is not to say you can't learn something from Russell's big peacocky street style showing. His coat's bold pattern, oversized fit, and luxe-y finishes are what made his look, after all. He could have worn it over a suit or a simple T-shirt and jeans and we'd still be looking at the coat first and foremost. And while you want one with not as much bulk or boasting as large a collar, today's market is ripe with outerwear just as epic now as this was in its day. So get one (we like more than a few here), wear the hell out of it, and let it be the A-list addition in your wardrobe.
