The Weeknd, a.k.a. Abel Tesfaye, and his girlfriend, Bella Hadid, are enjoying a romantic sojourn in Japan this week—and taking all the stylish selfies to prove it. In chronicling the trip, Tesfaye got to casually flex in a very of-the-moment blue-velvet bomber, or, as we like to call it, one of the 25 most hyped things of the season. He styled the jacket like most guys would, with a pair of slim jeans and a basic T-shirt. (The big cross necklace, face mask, and trucker hat he wore were just some requisite “famous in Japan” add-ons—no need to copy him there.)
The velvet jacket is one of fall’s biggest and most stylish trends, and we’re finally starting to see them from a variety of brands, not just the highest-end luxury labels. Cool contemporary lines like Our Legacy and A.P.C. have low-key versions out, while cheaper high-street brands are also selling their take on the trend. Naturally, those versions are a bit louder, so if you’re a guy who wants serious velvet bang for your buck, you’ll be pleased.
Regardless of how much you’re prepared to spend, or how loud you want to go with the color and embroidery, we think this is a good look. Especially if you're heading off on a photo-fueled weekend trip with friends; a plain black bomber jacket could make you look like Security.
