We Figured Out How to Tie Dallas Braden's Complicated and Unnecessary Tie Knot

It''s called the Eldredge, and it's ... it's a lot.

We talk a lot about streamlining your daily routine here at GQ, but maybe you're the kind of guy who likes to spend more time than necessary getting ready to leave the house. Perhaps instead of getting dressed and out the door as quickly as possible, you'd prefer to agonize over a single aspect of your outfit for longer than it takes to get through the rest of your pre-work regimen altogether.

If that's the kind of man you are, then the Eldredge tie knot might be for you.

This knot has been the center of some fascinating and slightly heated conversations at GQHQ today, because former pro-baseball player Dallas Braden wore it on ESPN Wednesday evening. We finally got to the point where we had to try it ourselves, and after watching a few instructional videos and fishing around the fashion closet for the right tie, we can tell you that it's definitely not for novices. (It took this reporter two tries to get the look even halfway right.)

The Eldredge looks a lot like the Merovingian (the name of the ass-numbingly complicated tie worn by Lambert Wilson's character in The Matrix Reloaded), but isn't the same thing at all. It's knotted primarily with the long, skinny end of the tie, and requires a true, dad-level power cravat: you'll need something that's both longer and wider than the medium-sized ties we favor right now to pull it off. Once you've acquired such a tie, skip to the 2:00 mark in this video and follow the steps:

See? See what we mean? This is a tie knot for the man who has the greatest luxury of all: time. If you're hustling to get literally anything done, go with a four-in-hand knot or something equally simple, because the Eldredge just isn't worth it. In fact, because it's definitely not a self-releasing knot, dismantling its advanced architecture can take as long as it does to put it together. And while it's an impressive looking feat of sartorial trickery, it'll also stand squarely in the way of your attempts (or someone else's) to loosen your collar at the end of the day.
