This $10,000 Ed Ruscha-Designed Jacket Is Kind Of A Steal

Ed and his son Eddie getting fitted at Huntsman.

It's not every day that one of the world's greatest living artists decides to make clothes.

But that changed not long ago, when artist Ed Ruscha teamed up with the Saville Row tailor Huntsman to help raise money for the Alzheimer's Association. One of the pieces to be auctioned at the the charity's annual Rita Hayworth Gala, which takes place Tuesday evening, is a bespoke tuxedo jacket lined with a print of Ruscha's painting "Boy Meets Girl." (It's unknown whether the reason this work was selected over hundreds of other options is that the tux can be made for a man or a woman, or because gender is a mostly empty construct.)

Huntsman will only make six of the jackets, and this one is the only one that will be sold, making it about as exclusive as a piece of men's clothing can get. And Ruscha had a specific reason for putting his artwork on the inside instead of on the outside.

"I like the idea of a concealed secret," the artist said. "When someone wears a great jacket, there is a private luxury that only the wearer can experience, almost like you are flashing."

The opening bid for this jacket, which comes along with a visit to Ruscha's private studio in Los Angeles, is $10,000. Which if you ask us is a small price to know you're wearing a piece of clothing that's unlike anything else on the planet.
