Luka Sabbat Is Over Skinny Jeans and Into Being the Next Movie Superhe

The Cool Teen™ and PacSun face talks about his evolving style, what he's wearing this holiday season, and where he's headed.

Professional cool kid and model Luka Sabbat might only be 18 but he's the kind of guy whose thoughts on skinny versus straight-leg denim–and how to not look like a try-hard at all those holiday parties you've got coming up—is well worth considering. We sat down with Sabbat, the face of PacSun's Holiday campaign and an ongoing collaborator of the brand, to hear where he's at with all that.

GQ: You’ve been the face of a few brands recently like Dolce & Gabbana and Ovadia and Sons. How does the PacSun experience differ from those experiences?

Luka Sabbat: It’s cool, everybody on set is pretty high energy so you’re not and tired and just, like, waiting and waiting. There are some shoots that are boring. But they give me the aux cord. I get to play what music I want. I get to pick my own clothes and everyone on set is in a good mood.

GQ: Do you have any memories of PacSun growing up?

I didn’t grow up with this culture. I grew up in Paris and when I came here I was just into gaming and I didn’t care about clothes. But I do remember the Been Trill collab with PacSun [in 2013]. That was crazy because Been Trill was part of that whole New York subculture with guys like Hood By Air—but PacSun was so L.A. And then I remember Riff Raff had a meet-and-great at the PacSun store in SoHo and the streets of New York were going crazy.

GQ: What pieces in this collection are you most into?

I love these jeans that I’m wearing. They’re short so you have mad ankle; you can wear them with low-top sneakers and white socks or black socks. I think I did these with like just a regular white shirt in the campaign. I’m not super aggressive with my denim. I mean, it depends. But with this collection I think it’s just about being calm and cozy. The pants aren’t tight.

GQ: So you're swearing off skinny jeans?

Yeah, I wear a lot of straight-leg denim now just because it’s super comfortable. I used to be into skinny jeans but now I’m not. You are either the creator or the consumer and there was a point where I was the consumer and then I started creating, and my style became more cozy. I used to wear, like, skinny jeans with those Saint Laurent high Cuban-heel boots but now I’m more like into straight-leg pants, sneakers, a nice sweater, nice jacket—no extra shit. I’m more on a cozy tip. I travel so much and I move around so much that I don’t really want to wear, like, heels and boots and tight-ass jeans. I’ve got to be comfortable. Every now and then I’ll wear the skinny jeans and boots if it’s that time to pop out, but most of the time I’m super chill.

GQ: What would you suggest a guy wear to a holiday party this time of year?

I would wear all black. I only wear a tux or a suit to some red carpet shit. If it’s like a dinner I’d wear black jeans, my snakeskin cowboy boots, a nice black sweater or button-up. Or I’d just throw a polo under a sweater and then throw a vintage trench coat on top of that.

GQ: How do you shop now that you’re working and traveling so much?

As I’ve gotten older it’s like I care less about clothes, but more about them at the same time. Now I’m more into collecting things I appreciate, the staples of the time. I only buy archive stuff that you can’t get in stores. I get free stuff, of course, and all of my friends make clothes so I get stuff from my friends or trade with my friends. Like, Warren Lotus, Virgil Abloh, Spaghetti Boys, Asspizza. Mike the Ruler helps me with vintage sometimes, but he usually just helps himself [laughs]. My dad helps me too. He hooked me up with What Goes Around Comes Around, and they find stuff for me.

GQ: How does your dad feel about the fact that you’ve followed in his footsteps a little bit by working in the fashion industry?

My dad works with me. He’s kind of my manager. He’s my dad-ager. We have a chill relationship. No one will have more of genuine interest in you and your well-being than your family. It’s definitely chill vibes.

GQ: What are your aspirations outside of working in fashion?

I studied acting in high school and took acting classes before that. It’s still something I want to do someday. I love action movies. I want to do superhero movies either with Marvel or DC. There’s no black superheroes. I mean, they’re starting to have them now but...I need somebody to come scoop me.
