This Jacket-Sweater Combo Is the Fall Layering Hack You Need in Your Life

A sartorial one-two punch

Who was the first brave soul to pair peanut butter and chocolate? Whoever it was, it was someone with grand vision and the courage to combine two seemingly opposed forces and know the outcome would be greater sum of their parts. Eddie Redmayne might just be one of these visionaries, able to see beyond what already exists—at least when it comes to your wardrobe.

We can't say for certain if the British actor invented the shawl collar sweater/jean jacket combo, but he certainly sold it to us when stepping out earlier today in London. It's one of the top layering scenarios you should try out this year. The stylish 34-year-old topped off a slim pair of khakis and some sweet white Gucci sneakers (a mere $620) with an olive green shawl-collar sweater under a faded denim jacket, and damn did it look good.

And much like chocolate and peanut butter, this pairing seems like one of those things that are so obvious and so brilliantly executed that it must have always existed, but no, some trailblazer had to bring it to the fore. Whoever that person is, bless you.

If you're jonesing for this look, here's our advice: start planning ahead. Traditionally, when you're looking for the perfect denim jacket, picking something that has a slim fit that's close to the body is ideal, but if you want to pull this off, you're going to want to pick a jacket that's slightly bigger so it can accommodate the sweater.

As for the sweater, wool is the best option here, because you want something breathable but also sturdy to help support the height of the collar. This isn't the time for a lightweight cotton or a airy cashmere, you want to insulate yourself with something a little more substantial in weight, hence the need for a bit of give in the outerwear.

And while this is a great look for fall's milder weather, it can take you take you almost all the way into the cold winter months. If you want a little more warmth, toss on a down vest, or even a topcoat over it, to prove that your layering skills are well beyond beginner level. Learn the cold weather rules of layering, master them, and then break them: there's nothing you can't do.
