Souvenir Jackets
A statement coat has always been the lazy man's way to look stylish but the embroidered satin bomber resonated more than any other style this year. Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Saint Laurent, and Valentino putting out their own luxed-up versions certainly didn't hurt the situation.
Destroyed Jeans
2016 was a crazy year for denim with patches, rips, and bleach spots all having a moment in the spotlight. The skinny-straight destroyed-at-the-knees look backed by Fear of God had by far the most weight however, with fans like Justin Bieber and Kanye West basically living in their pairs.
Bomber Jackets
For guys that weren't willing to go full crazy with a souvenir jacket, refined versions of the MA1 flight jacket were also pervasive this year. Instead of being tricked out with various bells and whistles, these designer coats were slimmed down and stripped down to nothing but the essentials.
Track Pants
Track pants were the trendy way to stay cozy this year, with guys like A$AP Rocky and brands like Burberry putting their stamp of approval on the staple. While they didn't usurp sweatpants as the athleisure bottom of choice, they certainly added some colorful excitement to things. (For guys who liked the vibe but not the fit, track jackets were also a popular move.)
Tour Merch
Kanye West, Justin Bieber, Drake, The Weeknd, and even John Mayer got into what we dubbed the Merch Wars this year: a competition to see who could own the wallets of fans, teens, and fashion enthusiasts using nothing but graphic T-shirts and pure, unfiltered hype.
Vacation Shirts
When we look back at the summer of '16 we'll remember three things: Tom Hiddleston creepily kissing Taylor Swift's hand, the chill vibe of life before a Trump presidency, and the tropical-print souvenir shirts that dangled off every ultra-skinny man from here to England.
Over the Top Embroidery
A fascination with far-out patches didn't stop with the souvenir jacket trend. From denim and sneakers to T-shirts, no menswear staple was safe from this Gucci-inspired more-is-more treatment. Snakes in particular were a hit, although butterflies also had a moment.
Turtlenecks and Mocknecks
From a suited up Zayn Malik at Tom Ford's runway show, to a decidedly more low-key Jaden Smith at the MTV Europe Music Awards, turtlenecks and mock-neck shirts were impossible to escape this year. (Finally. After literally years of making a case for them.)
Leather Loafers
Gucci loafers, or "deal sleds" as some know them, were revamped by Alessandro Michele this year, who made them leaner and meaner than before. The new look more or less inspired a full-blown resurgence of the footwear staple across a range of retailers, from Zara to other luxury brands.
Band T-Shirts
A complement to the tour merch craze, guys were obsessed with vintage rock T-shirts this year. Kanye West and Fear of God's Jerry Lorenzo were influential proponents of the trend, and now everyone from Urban Outfitters to H&M is selling knockoff versions.
