In today's over-styled, Instagram-filtered, (seemingly) excessively-polished world, finding something with a little grit is a welcome relief. Enter Greg Lauren, the designer who's taking America's sartorial reputation for clean athleticism and roughing it up a bit, with exemplary results. “My foundation is in the classics," Lauren told us earlier this year. "You have to understand them in order to riff.”
And riff he does. Lauren has established himself as a sort of anti-Ralph Lauren — who just so happens to be his uncle — with his distressed take on military and workwear. So it's an interesting turn of events that the on-the-rise label was tapped by Banana Republic for a special 16-piece capsule collection, hitting select locations next Tuesday, December 6th.
“Banana Republic is an iconic American retailer and I’m excited to be collaborating with them as I continue to expand my business,” Lauren said. “This collaboration is helping me explore new ways to extend my production capacity and test new ways of working while still maintaining a very hands-on approach to my craft.”
“Greg is a true artist who puts his heart and soul into every piece he creates," says Michael Anderson, SVP of Design at Banana Republic. "We share a passion for the details and had a great time playing with ways to marry our signature styles through his artistic approach.”
This is the second edition of an ongoing partnership between up-and-comers and the retail giant, a project brokered by the Council of Fashion Designers of America, or, as it's more succinctly known: the CFDA. "Our partnership with Banana Republic has allowed two designers the opportunity to grow and expand their consumer and production capacities in ways that otherwise may not have been possible,” says Steven Kolb, President and CEO of the CFDA. “We are happy to be able to work with an iconic American brand like Banana Republic and look forward to debuting the Greg Lauren for Banana Republic collection this holiday.”

Greg Lauren Wants to Change Menswear One Distressed Jacket at a Time
So that means just in time for gift-giving season, BR will be offering up something a little swerveier than their typical office-appropriate wear, adopting Lauren's aesthetic and selling things like slouchy knit lounge pants, raw-edge collarless poet's shirts, scoopneck knits with a bit of a lived-in look, some insouciant tailoring pieces like blazers and vests, and a offhand cashmere overcoat — all of which costs from $178 (for shirts) to $3,000 (for the aforementioned jacket).
"I think people are embracing creativity," Lauren says. "I think that creativity and uniqueness and this idea of a one-of-a-kind thing — whether it’s destroyed or handmade — is, to some people right now, more valuable than the most precious fabric. Regardless of the label, they’re recognizing that there’s an authorship behind what they’re wearing. Someone made this and there may not be another one like it, so that’s what gives it its value."
Below, our exclusive first look at the collaborations, available December 6th.
