Why Kanye West's Blond Hair Means Great Music Is Coming

We call the new look #BlondYe.

These are weird times for Kanye West and his fans. Between his cancelled tour, sneaker releases, and hospitalization, it's hard to know what, exactly, the future will hold for one of the best artists of the 21st century. But just as things started to look back on track yesterday with the unveiling of samples that will potentially be used on his new album, things once again derailed when Kanye West was spotted at fashion designer Rick Owens' furniture exhibition in Los Angeles. It's not strange that he was there (though we're glad to see him out and about)—it's that his hair is now blond.

Kanye West joins many celebrities who've dyed their hair this year. There's the good ones, like Orlando Bloom, and the not-so-good, like Miles Teller. Where West falls is hard to say given the lo-res photos and the fact that blond hair will always have a different effect when it's sported by someone with darker skin. The question isn't whether or not it suits Yeezy, though—it's why he chose now to dye his hair at all.

Was it simply an act of rebellion against his own public image? A re-brand of sorts? Is he leaning into the Kanye x Trump memes created in the wake of his endorsement of our new President-elect? Or was it simply brought along to show support for Frank Ocean, whose album Blond was not nominated for any Grammys (after not being submitted by Ocean at all). Previously West threatened to boycott the awards if Blond wasn't nominated, and we know Kanye West has no problem voicing his opinion on awards shows in public. Most likely it's some combination of all of the above.

For every Kanye West fan out there thinking this is a sign that we've officially lost Mr. West to his own narcissism for good, we'd like to point out that the last time West sported a radical, controversial hair style—a sort of flat-top mullet combo—he released the most sonically influential album of the last decade, the electronic, auto-tuned, icy masterpiece that is 808s & Heartbreak.
