The number of times Pharrell Williams has been ahead of the fashion curve? Honestly, too many to count. From gigantic Vivienne Westwood hats to grail-level Comme des Garçons garments, the producer extraordinaire has never shied away from a risky look—and has usually succeeded in turning it into a totally normal, deeply enviable one. Over the weekend, Williams took to the red carpet in what has become a signature look of his: a clean-cut blazer and sharp dress shorts. During a time when famous men are donning bedazzled harnesses and designer kilts, Pharrell’s shorts don’t seem too outrageous or over the top. But back when the style-forward look first made waves, it was another story.
Let’s flashback to the 2014 Academy Awards: Pharrell, who was nominated for the earworm of a song “Happy,” showed up in a Lanvin black tuxedo jacket with matching shorts and no socks. Keep in mind, this was long before the explosion of wild red carpet style, so the move certainly stood out from the crowd. The outfit—mainly the producer’s exposed legs—was met with a flood of criticism from the likes of Joan Rivers, Twitter, and even The New York Times. (For what it’s worth GQ called the look “downright dapper” back when it happened—a statement we’ll stand by.) But Pharrell didn’t seem to care: the blazer-and-dress-shorts look has been in his arsenal before it first made headlines and has remained there in the years to come. (He even wore a camouflage Chanel suit with shorts to the 2019 Oscars ceremony.)
But five years later, the tide has changed. Last year, during the NBA Finals, Lebron James waltzed through a stadium tunnel wearing a Thom Browne shorts suit. Odell Beckham Jr. wore a slim-fit kilt to this year’s Met Gala. Sure, both men turned some heads—but not nearly as many as Pharrell did. The shorts suit (or the kilt-suit, for that matter) just isn’t as shocking as it was five years. Men’s style has evolved and expanded, and is now more adventurous than it’s ever been. Pharrell has undoubtedly been there to help lead the way—the rest of the world is just finally catching on. He's just on up ahead, waiting patiently for us to catch up—and probably wearing a shorts suit.
