Nike Is Going Long on the Sneaker Moc

Even in the era of extremely wild footwear, the sneaker-mocassin hybrid has managed to stay out of the limelight. The slightly left-of-center style never quite took off with the same velocity as chunky dad sneakers, or sleek sock runners. That isn’t to say the fringe-y kicks aren’t without fans, however. This month, Nike has two pairs of kicks on deck that are stylish enough to win over some new fans as well.

The first comes from Nike Skateboarding and is a riff on the signature shoe of pro skater Stefan Janoski. The moccasin-inspired design features a slouchy collar and stitched details—the result is a sneaker that feels almost hand-crafted. However, this is Nike, so the rough-around-the-edges look gets offset by a pristine Max Air unit in the heel that provides soft cushioning with every step.

The second moc-esque sneaker comes from Nike's ongoing collaboration with Los Angeles streetwear label Fear of God. The shoe is made of ripstop nylon and features a variety of elevated details: an elasticized strap with Velcro fastening, a bungee cord with toggle adjustment, and magnetic snaps at the side. The sneaker sits atop a chunky midsole with Air Max 180-inspired Zoom Air heel unit and debossed branding.
