J.Crew's Popular Ludlow Suit Just Got Even Better

Which, when you think about it, is saying a lot

Some companies—most companies, actually—might look at a product with an eight-year track record of strong sales, great reviews, and a constant stream of compliments from the outside world and think, "OK. We're done here." But the designers at J.Crew, whose Ludlow suit has been flying off the racks since 2008, are going in the other direction. They've decided that it's time for a little bit of an upgrade.

On Tuesday, the brand announced that it will renew its partnership with Martin Greenfield, the legendary Brooklyn tailor who's been making suits by hand for over 60 years. (His stuff is so good that it's been on the backs of presidents, Oscar winners, and even the cover of GQ.) The two firms last worked together in 2014, and only sold the fruits of their collaboration at two of J.Crew's New York City stores. This time around, production isn't quite so limited, so customers will be able to buy Greenfield's handwork in five stores—three in the Big Apple, one in Boston, another in San Francisco—and on its website.

While other Ludlow suits are cut from Italian and British fabrics, the Greenfield suits are truly all American: the cloth for both the charcoal glen plaid and navy option comes from American Woolen Company, based in Connecticut. It also comes at a higher price point than other Ludlows (it's $1,250, while it's brothers go for around $650), but that makes sense: an entirely American-made suit of this quality is a rare thing. Which will make getting compliments from strangers on the street that much more satisfying.
