Heads Up! These Suiting Mistakes Will Make You Look Shorter

Ewan McGregor's suit jacket isn't doing him any favors.

Ewan McGregor has worn a lot of good suits in his day so today, when he showed up at Sirius radio to promote his new film American Pastoral in an ill-fitting rig, we were slightly disappointed. His slim black suit and black T-shirt combination is classic red carpet fare, but it was ruined by a third jacket button and some rolled-up sleeves lined in red satin. Both missteps made the actor appear shorter than he deserves—never a good thing, whether you're 5'10" like McGregor or otherwise.

McGregor's jacket works against his height by visually shrinking his torso with that third button. As a general rule, a two-button suit jacket is the most flattering because of the deeper V it creates along your torso. Making matters worse, the sleeves make him look like a little kid who still hasn't grown into his clothes. The only time a man has successfully shown off his jacket lining was when the Fresh Prince of Bel Air turned his prep school blazer inside out. In this case, we're pretty sure McGregor wasn't intentionally trying to show his off. Instead, we'd guess he found himself en route to an event with a pair of sleeves that were too long. To this we say: always make sure your suit fits correctly before venturing out (and being photographed). Take the damn thing to a tailor and have the sleeves adjusted. But if it's already too late, we suggest tucking the extra fabric under and inside your cuff as opposed to rolling the cuffs out like you would on a denim jacket. That way you camouflage the lack of proper tailoring until you can get it fixed.
