Miles Teller Shows You How to Mix Up Your Favorite Fall Suit

It's all about texture, people

While wearing all black is the unofficial cheater's trick to looking stylish with little-to-no effort (just ask Alexander Wang), that sort of thinking mainly applies to more casual clothing like jeans, T-shirts, and sweatshirts. It's considerably more difficult to make, say, a suit, button-up shirt, and tie work in all black—the reason being that at a certain point, without any contrasting colors, you'll just end up looking like a big dark blob. No bueno.

However, it can not only be done, it can be done well, as proven by Miles Teller yesterday at the BFI Film Festival in London. Teller went head-to-toe black, but—and here's the takeaway—he made sure to mix it up when it came to texture, so you don't look like some dark cosmic mass attracting and then devouring light. So, while he had a matching matte black shirt and tie combo, he wore it under a suit with a flecked fabric, which helped break the outfit up (the whole thing was from Givenchy, by the way). He finished things off in black, high-shine shoes and a Cartier watch, all of which just helped ensure that the outfit looked cohesive but varied—a tricky balance for guys going for a monochromatic look.
